Well, maybe not me."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The DNA world received the news last week that 23andMe filed for bankruptcy. This has been a long time coming. I&#8217;ve collected some of the best information about the situation here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get the information straight from <strong>23andMe<\/strong>, read their press release <a href=\"https:\/\/investors.23andme.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/23andme-initiates-voluntary-chapter-11-process-maximize\">here<\/a> or their <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.23andme.com\/articles\/open-letter\">open letter<\/a> to customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As always, <strong>Roberta Estes<\/strong> provides a <a href=\"https:\/\/dna-explained.com\/2025\/03\/25\/23andme-files-for-bankruptcy-what-you-need-to-know\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/dna-explained.com\/2025\/03\/25\/23andme-files-for-bankruptcy-what-you-need-to-know\/\">summary and action steps<\/a> in her blog, DNAeXplained. <strong>Leah Larkin<\/strong> provided her perspective a couple of days later, <a href=\"https:\/\/thednageek.com\/23andme-is-reorganizing-its-okay\/\">23andMe is Reorganizing. It&#8217;s Okay.<\/a> <strong>Diahan Southard<\/strong> posted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/diahansouthard\/reel\/DHlw9FbpNRd\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/diahansouthard\/reel\/DHlw9FbpNRd\/\">a video<\/a> on Instagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Vancouver Sun<\/strong> provided a Canadian perspective <a href=\"https:\/\/vancouversun.com\/news\/23andme-bankruptcy-genetic-data-delete\">here<\/a>, stating that experts advised deleting data. <strong>NPR<\/strong> provided <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/03\/24\/nx-s1-5338622\/23andme-bankruptcy-genetic-data-privacy\">analysis<\/a> as well. The <strong>Attorney General of California<\/strong> posted a <a href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/news\/press-releases\/attorney-general-bonta-urgently-issues-consumer-alert-23andme-customers\">consumer alert<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You are the only person who knows your own tolerance of risk. I have not used 23andMe as much as I use other DNA testing company websites, since the company was not designed to assist people with genealogy research. Yes, I did look for matches there and use the chromosome browser (when it existed), but the emphasis at 23andMe has always been on the health aspects of DNA. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My hope is that those leaving 23andMe will download their data first (it&#8217;s what they paid for) and transfer their DNA to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myheritage.com\/dna\/upload\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.myheritage.com\/dna\/upload\">MyHeritage<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familytreedna.com\/autosomal-transfer\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.familytreedna.com\/autosomal-transfer\">FamilyTreeDNA<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/livingdna.com\/ca\/free-dna-upload\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/livingdna.com\/ca\/free-dna-upload\">LivingDNA<\/a>. These three companies accept autosomal DNA transfers. All three have unique tools and customers and spotless records for privacy and security.
